I used to read "Peanuts," "Doonesbury," "The Far Side" and "Bloom County" every day. Only "Doonesbury" remains. The passing of a popular comic strip is a cultural moment, and though I was never a big fan of "For Better or For Worse," it's simple and consistent message of "humor and hope through adversity" rang true.
Day by day, an artist pours something of herself or himself into the work, and with a comic strip, the pressure to evoke a smile or laugh is intense. Few can manage it well, and fewer still can anchor their efforts in reality. Ms. Johnston did, and it's a good thing she can end her turn on the social stage on her terms.
